Happy Spring from all of us here at Old Mill Marina! Though it doesn’t really feel like spring yet – snowmobile trails still open, ice trail is still staked, and there is snow everywhere we look!

Since buying the marina in 2003, the earliest ice out we experienced was March 27th, and three times we’ve experienced a May ice out. The average has always been a day or two either side of April 18th. But 2019 is shaping up to possibly be the latest ice out ever! There is a ton of ice on the lake still, and boating just isn’t in the air here yet.

You will find your slip invoice attached to this letter. Not many changes at the marina to cover off in this letter this year. Most people know that we closed our ramp to public use last year. Signs will be posted at the ramp this year, indicating a $50 ramp fee. In the case where a slip customer needs to use the ramp, you can avoid this fee by making arrangements to utilize the ramp after hours here at the marina. During hours that the service department is open, Old Mill Marina staff will assist and this ramp fee reflects the labour time to have a yard person help at the ramp. With the growth of our service department, the ramp is dedicated for our own use.

The other item to review in this letter is the use of the garbage and recycling dumpsters here at the marina. Unfortunately, we saw a fair bit of abuse of this service last summer – large amounts of garbage that was well beyond regular household waste (cottage renovations and cottage real estate move in/out), small fridges, BBQs, and mattresses placed in the dumpster (or even worse, beside it on the ground). This would then spiral, as a full dumpster would lead to customers opting to simply leave garbage on the ground in front of the dumpster.

If we see a repeat of the garbage issues again this year, the dumpsters will be removed midseason and all of us will have to resort to hauling garbage and recycling to the Maple Ridge Road transfer station, or taking it home if outside the transfer station hours. This is how it was done from 2006 until 2012.

On a more positive note, our service team is in place and getting geared up for Spring Launch season. As with other years, we will prioritize water access launches, knowing how many customers rely on their boats to get to the cottage. Visit our website to submit your online launch request and get in the queue.

We want to thank each of you for your continued support in choosing Old Mill Marina for your boating needs. Here is looking forward to a warm, sunny, bug-free summer!
