Fuel, boats and ethanol:
We have
had several questions about what grade of fuel we carry at Old
Mill Marina, and whether or not there is ethanol in our fuel.
Prior to 2008, we only carried regular fuel, or 87 octane, in
the summer season. Petro Canada is permitting us to
carrying ethanol free gasoline for at least the next year, so
there is no ethanol in the fuel you purchase at Old Mill Marina.
Incidentally, in the winter, we upgrade to premium fuel, or 91
Octane, due to popularity with the snowmobilers.
Why the
fuss? One of the downsides to ethanol is that it attracts
and binds with water molecules. Anyone purchasing gasoline
for a marine engine at a automotive gas station will have
ethanol in their fuel, which will make a marine engine
susceptible to water the gas. An inline water separating
fuel filter would be a wise investment for anyone fuelling their
boat this way.
For an indepth discussion of ethanol and how
it affects your Mercury or Mercruiser engine, please visit
Mercury's Ethanol FAQ site.
